The Puerto Rican candidate called for the importance of recognizing the history of reproductive rights and how minority women have been subjected to unethical reproductive experience experiments and forced sterilization.
For María Revelles, candidate for Florida House of Representatives 47 district, comments like those by JD Vance, characterizing women in the Democratic Party as “childless cat ladies,” only divide society and divert attention from more important issues.
In 2021, Donald Trump’s running mate, questioned Vice President Kamala Harris’ leadership because she did not have biological children.

In a Fox News interview, he referred to some Democratic leaders, including Harris, US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and US Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, as “a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they’ve made and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable, too.”
“Comments like ‘childless cat ladies’ are not only disrespectful but also dismissive of the diverse experiences and contributions of individuals in our society. Whether someone has Children or not, does not determine our worth or ability to contribute meaningfully to the communities and to our nation,” Revelles told Floricuas.
The Puerto Rican candidate said the focus should be on building an inclusive society that values each individual’s choices and contributions.
Vance’s comments have further emphasized the GOP’s challenges in appealing to female voters and addressing issues like reproductive rights.

“This historical injustice underscores the brutality and insensitivity of remarks that belittle women’s choices regarding parenthood. Women, especially those from minority communities like those that went through millions of forced sterilizations in Puerto Rico have fought long and hard for the right to make autonomous decisions about their bodies and their life in their lives, respecting women’s rights means knowledge and rectifying past wrongs and ensuring that all women have the freedom to choose their path without fear of judgment or coercion,” Revelles said.
